(Safety Competence And Pedagogical Welfare)

Our fifth webinar was about "Importance of pedagogical well-being in teaching ang guidance, and creating safe study environment." Some people worked in a group and some of us prepared our own presentation but as a whole discussion this webinar have been quite informative and insightful. Despite of sick condition of a few of our peers, they presented everything diligently. I personally joined the webinar a bit later but soon after joining I got involved in discussion and then presented my part. In this reflection I would like to pen down our discussion and the core points that we discussed in this webinar.

First of all I'll talk about well-being. What is Well-being?

Well-being is the experience of health and happiness. It includes mental and physical healthy, physical and emotional safety and a feeling of belonging, sense of purpose, achievement and success.
Well-being is one of the key components in teaching and guidance, for both teacher and student.
For children and young people to be well, teachers must also be well.
The education of young children and people is at the core of teacher’s work, and their success underpins their daily efforts, enthusiasm, and commitment (Mc. Callum & Price, 2010, 2016).
Teachers play a vital role in productivity and well-being of their students. Well teachers are able to contribute to the social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and physical well-being of their students (Darling-Hammond, 2012; Hattie, 2009, 2015; Rubie-Davis, 2014; Wyn, 2009).
Teachers contribute to the academic development of their students.

What is Pedagogical well-being?

Pedagogical well-being is a systematic entity based on interaction between teachers, students, other colleagues and networks (design, methods, assessments etc.).
It is also influenced by the support and interaction of the work community (emotional support and safe learning environment).
Furthermore, to build up pedagogical well-being requires pedagogical awareness, understanding of teaching, learning, well-being and the connection between them. In addition, Pedagogical well-being can be strengthened by developing action and structures that support teacher involvement, competence, motivation, expertise and collaboration.

To elaborate further, pedagogical well-being has two levels:
Pedagogical well-being has two levels.

The individual level:

As an individual experiencing independence, belonging, feelings of success, positive emotions and enthusiasm.

The level of community:

As a community, encouragement, favorable atmosphere, empowerment, support from other teachers/colleagues.
Working together (co-designing teaching or updating the curriculum).

Community where we work ,plays a vital role in our well-being . A supportive community (colleagues and other stakeholders) boost up the energy of positivity .

Similarly, students' well-being is quite important in learning and guidance. Teacher should provide a safe and healthy class room environment.
“ A teacher who allows students to experiment, fail and develop, supports a safer learning environment & better study well-being” (https://www.aalto.fi/en/services/wellbeing-in-teaching-holistic-wellbeing-in-studies-and-work)

Schools and teachers have an essential role to play in supporting students to make healthy lifestyle choices and understand the effects of their choices on their health and well-being.
The social and emotional skills, knowledge and behaviors that young people learn in the classroom help them build strength and set the pattern for how they will manage their physical and mental health throughout their lives and careers.
Institutes and teachers can provide students with reliable information and can deepen their understanding of the choices they face (e.g. career choices).

A strong and supportive relationship between teacher and students provides students with the emotional resources to step out of their intellectual comfort zone and explore new ideas and ways of thinking which is fundamental to educational achievement.
Additionally, students' physical, emotional and environmental safety is one of the essential parts.

Supporting a healthy environment for students in the classroom is essential for their overall development and help students to grow intellectually e.g:
Positive and supportive classroom culture.
Motivation and encouragement.
Open communication and sense of belonging.
Emotional support.
Mental and physical support.

Maintaining (Teacher’s) own pedagogical well-being is equally important. For instance:

Professional well-being:

Up to date knowledge and experience of work management increases motivation, commitment and endurance.
Professional competence, work management at different phases of the work cycle quality management and pre personal work increases the teachers ability to cope with changing task and working condition.
The development of competence promotes and supports readiness and courage for renewals.

Physical well-being:

Having enough time for self-care and well-being is very important for teachers. The more relaxed and balanced they feel, the more effectively they can also engage their students.
