Two days in OAMK
Rejuvenation
It has always been my dream to become a professional teacher and OAMK provided me a chance to explore and learn about what a professional teacher in higher education means. I started this journey on 25th May by attending virtual orientation and met the astounding bunch of people with the same ambition.
Afterwards, I went to Oulu university to take my contact classes on 29th and 30th of August. Initially, I was stressed, confused, nervous and less motivated. I traveled all the way from Helsinki to attend the classes. It was such a hectic and tiring journey so it added up to my anxiety. A feeling of disappointment crossed my mind for not being able to participate actively in the beginning. However, I mustered up all my courage to overcome the negative feelings.
Meeting people
When I met my class fellows/team mates, it really energized me. People with diversified knowledge, experience, backgrounds and nationalities amazed me in different ways. Sitting in a multicultural environment and knowing about their backgrounds was a mind blowing experience for me. Eventually by the end of the day, I was excited and motivated to learn and explore.
A background of Finnish teaching
Our respected teachers Kimmo and Riikka have been so kind and helpful to us. They poured their knowledge about teaching in higher education in Finland, described some important factors in Finnish education system such as some key elements like lifelong learning, quality, autonomy, wellbeing and equality. Furthermore, they familiarized us with the concept that Finnish education system does not worry about artificial or arbitrary merit based systems. There is no environment of competition instead cooperation is the norm.
Team Work
During two days in university, we were divided into different groups to work as a team and it was a stimulating idea. Results of team work are always better than working individually. On the first day, we were given a task to demonstrate cycling competence. First of all, we had a group discussion and everyone of us presented ideas and thoughts about the topic and worked together on the given tasks to assess the competence. As a result we were more clear in the end about assessment criteria.
The next day's activity was to teach each other and give feedback. Each group had a different topic to teach. Our topic was “Traits of adult learners in higher education”. Afterwards, all the groups were merged with each other to teach about their topics. Everyone presented what they prepared. For instance our group prepared a video for brainstorming and engaged everyone in activity. Each one from the different groups performed remarkably. We gave feedback and honest opinions to each other and ended up our tasks.
Final Thoughts
To sum up the whole experience and two days in Oulu University. I would like to say it has been overwhelmingly impressive. I am more motivated and geared up to learn and explore with super talented peers and skillful teachers.
